Where to begin. Well if you’re anything like me you probably have a bunch of Pinterest boards pinned and an idea of how you want your smash session theme to go. We love a good visual and have so much fun planning and guiding themes along side you! Dreamy Moon Photography will assist you with colour pallets, decoration ideas and even coordinating outfits. We also have a huge range of outfits for the little ones to wear from newborn size 00000 all the way up to size 2 for the cake smash toddlers.

Style it…

Whether you want the full Shazam! Balloon arch, lots of props or want to keep it more minimalistic with a few items to enhance the background. Such as a curtain drape or some dried flowers. We love to source our decor locally and want to create a unique backdrop for you. If your little one has a favourite item, we definitely encourage to bring it along and create special keepsake memories. Alternatively, you could keep it a surprise and leaving it up to us to plan and decorate your whole session. Giving over creative reign can be such a beautiful reveal.

In today’s blog I’m going to talk about all of our favourite studio props!

Because who doesn’t love a good ol’ prop! Of course we have to start with the favourite and most requested prop. The rattan rectangle basket. In natural toned bamboo, this prop is the perfect size for a newborn or sitter. Used in both our newborn and cakesmash sessions. Another highly requested prop is the timeless moon prop! A hand built wooden box in the shape of a moon, painted creamy white. Perfect for minimalist or themed photo shoots. Used in both cake smash, milestone and newborn shoots. This prop is beautiful when paired with a textured wrap.

The classic woven basket is one of our favourite newborn props to use during our sessions. It is the perfect size for a little bean to be placed in so cosily. This prop was one of Dreamy Moon Photography’s original props and still stands classic with the change of time. Last but not least, the iconic wooden box! A beautiful chocolate colour. This box is great for sitters, cake smashes, newborns and milestone photos. You can get super creative and even turn this box upside down for older children to sit on or stack with decorations. Hello, I am Tiana the founder of Dreamy Moon Photography. Dreamy Moon Photography is based around creating unique experiences for our clients who want a trusted professional to guide them through their session.

Why Dreamy Moon Photography started:

Now I go into much more detail in my other blog pose “ What photography means to me”. But I will briefly explain how DMP became about.Having my first child inspired me to start DMP. I wanted to capture the endless moments and realised that I could do the same for other families. Photography was already a hobby of mine, but I wanted to learn the professional reigns.

Tiana’s Education:

Education and knowledge is the key to growth. I strongly believe in investing into yourself and after knowing that I wanted to turn photography into a career, I went down the education rabbit hole. It first started with a few courses through click love grow. This is amazing for setting you up for the foundations. But I knew in my heart that I really wanted to work with babies. With that in mind I did some specialised training with Sarah Scott, Natasha Galley, Emily Wilcokson and Meg Bitton.

At Dreamy Moon Photography, we are continually adding to our education. We strongly believe in investing into our experience each year. We are currently working with a mentor who is known internationally for their work. Creating a safe environment for our clients is number one priority and that coincides with correct training. Now if you also need want to get into the nitty gritty, I’ve also done several courses in Nutrition and Dietetics, Food science and Graphic design at Newcastle university. Which I guess shaped me to be who I am today.

Tiana’s experience:

I’ve been specialising in newborn photography for four years now. I love working with babies and have focused my education around that niche.

In the last two years we have started photographing weddings. Now this is a completely different style of photography and I’m all for it. We love being able to travel and capture the candid moments of someone’s special day.

As a first time mum, you want to be so prepared of the arrival of your new bubba! We spend so much time planing, nesting and preparing to make sure we have everything we need for this new bubba. But it can be overwhelming when it comes to getting it all together.

Firstly let’s put a few things together for the first few weeks of postpartum because mama you have to look after your self too. Now I’m not your most conventional person. I love a great low-tox alternative. So be prepared to have some different options.

For the mama…

Peri bottle – the Kmart sauce squirter is perfect for the job.

Yoni steaming herbs – add into peri bottle to aid with healing.

Slippery elm and olive oil paste- helps with tears or grazes.

Castor oil and heat pack – to warm to womb

Warming womb tinctures

Black sesame seed oil – rub on womb

Bonding herbal tincture – helps with mother baby connection

Congee, broths and stews – easy, nutritious postpartum meals.

Pads, pads, pads and more pads

Witch hazel peri spray – antibacterial spray

Bluey pads – to catch any bleeding

Haaka– help catch your breast milk

The first 40 days book – amazing postpartum resource. In fact I wrote a whole blog post about it

Okay now that we have mama sorted, let’s move on to baby.

A milk source – if you are choosing to breastfeed, perhaps consider some nipple balm or a pump. Alternatively if you choose to formula feed, you will have to get some bottles and a steriliser.

Something to catch the poop and wee – cloth nappies, disposable or even elimination communication. Our favourite style of cloth nappies are bare and boho. We also love the clean cloth nappy method for cleaning and sanitising your nappies. As for disposables. Tooshies by toms, rascal and friends and naty nappies are amazing natural brands.

A safe place to sleep. This could be a bassinet, cot or co sleeper.

A car seat. Hey we have to drive around, right?

Some warm clothes, zip onesies are a must!

Loads of cuddles!

Sometimes we over complicate what our baby really needs but I love to bring it back to the basics.

The consultation

When you decide to book a session with Dreamy Moon Photography, you will receive a consultation phone call. Here we will discuss all of your needs, wants and session goals. We will discuss any decor details and session plans. You will also receive a detailed session and investment guide. Showcasing behind the scene videos, artwork and what our studio has to offer.

The studio

When it comes time for your session, we will greet you out the front of the studio. You’ll be chauffeured into our dimly lit coastal inspired studio. There is a beautiful seating area for those wanting to relax. Alternatively you can be involved in the shooting area as-well.

The session

We are specifically trained in handling your baby and children safely. Dreamy Moon Photography holds a working with children check. We take pride that our clients always feel relaxed during their session knowing their babies and children are in the best hands. Your session will be already set up and ready to go with decor, backdrops and outfits. Depending on your session type, time durations range from 30 minutes to 3 hours.

The viewing appointment

After your session is all finished we will arrange one more date for you to come back to the studio to view and select your favourite images. We will have the big screen on display and have nibblies available. Prepare to have some tears and laughter seeing your beautiful baby or children’s images. Dreamy Moon Photography will guide you through the selection process and ensure you get the best heirlooms for your family’s needs and wants

The reveal!

Yay, our favourite part. The reveal of your family artwork! A complete finished art piece for you to treasure and pass down for generations to come.

Gold Coast QLD Baby Photographer | Jordi’s Cake Smash

The planning

I was discussing with Jordie’s Mama “Jaime”, about the vision she wanted for her baby’s cake smash session. But Jaime was all open to our creative flows. So we got brain storming about different themes and definitely kept coming back to minimalistic / neutral. The focus was all on Jordi!

The session

Dressed up in little striped overalls, Jordi had arrived at our studio. He was a little shy at first but did not take long to warm up at all. Jaime informed me that Jordi loves to listed to Doja Cat. So of course we had to put it on! Immediately he started bopping, clapping and dancing. Full of laughter and giggles. Jordi was so happy to get into the cake. Tasting and eating it. We got some extremely cute images of him!

Time for a splash bath…

After Jordi had finished up with the cake, we had organised a splash bath for him. He loved it and went wild! Splashing the whole studio down. His personality was contagious and made everyone laugh! It did not take long at all the capture him enjoying his bath.

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Oli’s Cake Smash

It’s Oli’s Birthday!

We travelled down to Port Stevens to celebrate and capture our nephew “Oli’s” first birthday. This was an extra special photoshoot. As we missed out on capturing his newborn photos due to covid border closures. So we had to make up for lost time and organise a cake smash, of course…

The setup

Now I don’t normally travel for studio photography however, when given the opportunity the creative juices will flow. We decided to decorate Leisa’s (Oli’s mama, aka my sister) spare bedroom. They had just laid down new wooden flooring. Which was perfect for the set up! Adding in Oli’s favourite tonker truck, presents and balloons to finish off the decor. The cake was a chocolate mud cake decorated in rainbow dots. To add the final touches we placed a customised cake topper on top of the cake.

The smash itself

Of course we started the shoot with a classic milestone picture. But Oli wanted the cake straight away! Oli went ham on the cake and it was so cute! He literally picked the whole cake up and was smashing it on the floor. The funniest shoot to date. The cake was quite firm as it was a mud cake, so we gently cut a slice out for Oli to eat. He was nibbling on the slice like a little block of cheese. It was so cute to watch.

It’s always such a pleasure to be able to document the first year of a baby’s life. They honestly change so much and time goes to quickly. It truely is bitter sweet!
