Gold Coast QLD Baby Photographer | Choosing props for your photo session

Isn’t it so exciting when you book a photoshoot! There is so much creative freedom you get when you book in with Dreamy Moon Photography. From a huge variety of outfits to select from our client closet. To backdrops, accessories and of course props.

You get to completely tailor your photoshoot experience with the guidance and expertise of our team. So what to consider when you do get the chance to choose your props. Of course we will guide you along the process but here is a list of tips to help you also decide.

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Props, accessories and more!

Choosing your props

  1. Theme, are you going minimal, rustic, boho, lots of decor, different colours etc.
  2. What type of session are you doing. Some props are more appropriate for newborns whilst others are more appropriate for older toddlers. Your photographer will give great suggestions!
  3. How big is your little one, stream lining off the previous point… it’s important to discuss the size of your little one with your photographer as the will really narrow down the best prop fit.

Alternatively if choosing your favourite prop is a little overwhelming you can always leave the creative reigns up to your photographer. But it is also nice to have some in put too.

We are constantly updating our prop selection at Dreamy Moon Photography. When you book in you will be sent a guide where you can select your favourite props, outfits and accessories!

Burleigh Heads QLD Newborn Photography | November Haul

Burleigh Heads QLD Newborn Photography | November Haul

We love a good monthly haul here at Dreamy Moon Photography. Of course we have to share with you what we picked up for the studio this month! Firstly, if you can not tell from the pictures by now, this theme is very Christmas orientated! Tis’ the season to get into all the reds, greens, golds and festive colours! And we just couldn’t help ourselves with some of these cute Christmas outfits!

The Outfits!

The first outfit we picked up is a gorgeous red and white pin striped ruffled little romper by Bencer and Hazelnut. Which can be paired with a white ruffled under shirt. Or something with a saying, for example ‘ Baby’s first Christmas’…. This piece is going to photography so beautifully on your little ones! It can also be used for both Christmas and festivities, but also a cake smash session if you love the colour red or vintage look.

Next we picked up a little white linen ruffle sleeved romper from one of our favourite baby boutiques, two darlings.. This romper is absolutely gorgeous and such a versatile piece being all white. This romper can be used for the festivities, but also family sessions, sibling sessions, milestone sessions and of course cake smashes. It also has and adjustable back which will accomodate for a variety of sizes between 00-1.

To add to the festivities, our recent purchase was a sibling plaid Christmas set. A little baby romper and a matching big brother shirt & shorts set. This set is absolutely adorable and will be perfect for Christmas Sessions!

Christmas Markets

We will be bringing all of these outfits, plus more to our Christmas Mini Sessions and the Hide and Seek Markets in Upper Coomera on the 19th of November and the 10th of December.

The Delivery – Gold Coast QLD baby photographer | New props and accessories!

We love a good prop haul and we love it when the delivery driver drops it off! I kid you not he almost didn’t deliver it because he couldn’t find the studio. So I ran out and met up with him to collect the package. Yeah I’m that keen person, patiently waiting for the packages to arrive!  We had a few newborn sessions coming up and I always try to take this opportunity to pick out something new for each baby who comes into the studio. Sometimes when it’s a last minute shoot we don’t always have the chance, but when we do. We take full advantage!

The Props

I went onto my favourite prop vendor and picked out a beaten rattan flower basket, designed for newborn babies. This prop is amazing for getting those sleepy wrapped shots or head on hands.  When this prop arrived in the studio, it was even more beautiful in person. In fact we even played ‘this or that’ using this prop and it got 100% of the votes as the preferred prop.

To fill the basket, I selected a little baby pink frilled wrap/ basket filler. As this was for our client Elody’s newborn session. Such a beautiful layer to add a little bit of depth into any photo.

I also picked up a little mohair outfit and matching bonnet. In the shade fawn. This outfit is absolutely the cutest thing I have ever seen. I love purchasing local and buying hand made products. This outfit is a true depiction of that.

Lastly for this little prop haul we actually decided to do a little DIY project. My sister had send me through an inspiration picture of a swing for a baby (totally safe and used as a posed prop only). We just had to make it. So we went to Bunnings and got all the materials we needed.  Luca spent the after hand crafting this prop and ensuring it was all smoothed down. Perfect for a newborn baby. Whilst he did that I also put up our little halo and bonnet peg holder on the wall which was also a super cute project.

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Props & Accessories

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Props, accessories and more!

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Props & Accessories

I had an idea – South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Props & Accessories

Over the weekend I had decided to pull every Dreamy Moon Photography prop, accessories and client clothes out into the studio and photograph each individual item. I wanted to craft together an easily accessible place to view everything we currently have in the studio. Of course, it’s is always updating. However maybe I can update this collage and photos regularly!

This was actually an entire afternoon project and I completely underestimated how much we have tucked away in the studio storage closets. Safe to say it was definitely a fun project. It allowed me to take inventory on what we could purchase in the near future and what we probably don’t need. But let’s be real, “I’ll probably buy another shade of cream backdrop”.

I did film a behind the scenes video for those who adore watching the Dreamy Moon Photography YouTube channel.

The client closet…

Now if you have been to the studio, you would know that we love rattan and bamboo everything! Of course the majority of our props were made of those materials. But truely we try to intentionally select props that are made from natural materials.

As for our client wardrobe, there is a huge selection from 0000-size 2. Perfect to add a bit of variety to a newborn session and a selection of pieces for cake smashes! I also have a few special pieces coming into the studio too. A few items that are hand crafted from the states.

Okay, okay, let’s talk bonnets and halos… because this is one that I had stored away and pulled them all out. We had was more than what we expected. We will add a few more dried floral halos in however. I just love them all and can’t decide! I will be adding these collages into our guides for our clients to have a look at. This will allow you to be able to easily pick and choose what you want for your session.

The planning – Burleigh Heads QLD Newborn Photography | Reeve’s Session

Jordan and Bianca are good friends of ours and when we found out the were pregnant not long after we were. We knew that we would have to squeeze in a newborn shoot for them!  Bianca, had a cesarean with her first baby and had opted for another with Reeve. Which meant we had to account for the recovery and allow an extra week before we got into the studio to photograph Reeve’s newborn session.

But once we had the clear, we had set a date in stone. Now of course we had to plan what props and colours to use for this session and I wanted to pull some inspiration from Reeve’s family home. So a colour palette of creams, browns and blues were perfect. A little bit nautical themed…

The session

Reeve came into the studio and we started off with photographing him in the rattan rectangular basket prop. I added a little bonnet on his head too. He was so little around 3.2kg that I had to adjust the props to fit him in. After we were all finished photographing him in the props. We moved on to the posing bed. We started with bottoms up and ended with Huck Finn (bottoms down). Capturing Reeve, we managed to photograph him on a little swing prop and in a mohair outfit. He did so well.

Gold Coast QLD Newborn Photography | Teodora’s Cake Smash Album – This is the most stunning album ever!

Teodora is the most photogenic baby we have photographed in the studio. Full of giggles and laughter. Her bubbly personality was contagious and shined throughout her images.

We are so pleased her parents selected an album to showcase her beautiful personality. Click here to get a sneak peak into the viewing appointment video. Their reactions are absolutely humbling!

The Album

Well Teodora’s album finally arrived in the studio and it is everything we imagined. Light airy, bright and white. Big blue eyes and smiles full of life.

The album holds 30 images over numerous spreads. A flatlay album was of choice. This album consistently showcases the storyline of Teodora’s cake smash session. Starting off with her milestone images. Dressed in an all white romper, a bonnet and use of the moon prop. Followed by the cake smash itself. And lastly the splash bath.

We filmed an album sneak peak over on our Dreamy Moon Photography YouTube channel.

Click here to view the beautiful album.

We can not wait for Teodora’s parents reaction when the come and pick up the album in person! There is nothing more special than seeing the faces of our clients when they get to see their artwork of their babies for the first time!

Gold Coast QLD Newborn Photography | Why Homebirth

Gold Coast QLD Newborn Photography | Why Homebirth

Gold Coast QLD Newborn Photography | Why Homebirth

Homebirth!

An amazing, beautiful and empowering experience… Something that I wish all expecting mamas would consider. Of course know that wherever you birth does not matter if you feel safe to birth there.

Home birth is an incredible option to bring your baby into earth side. They will be birthed into the comfort of their own home, surrounded by their loved ones.

But let’s talk about the real nitty gritty benefits of home birthing.

Your home is full of yours and your baby’s microbiome. This means that you basically have an ecosystem of bacteria, fungal, viruses and germs that you, your family and baby are exposed to. Birthing your baby at home minimises the exposure to foreign germs.

When you choose to homebirth you are also minimising your risk to unnecessary intervention. Women who homebirth have a lower rate of 3rd and 4th degree tears. Have higher success rates for VBAC and more personalised care.

So why do women choose to home

Birth?

  • You have the ability to choose whatever positions you want to birth in.
  • Familiar surroundings
  • Previous hospital birth trauma
  • Desire for a natural birth
  • Choice with who is involved in your birth.
  • Minimising intervention

If home birth is something that speaks to you, there are plenty more resources to look into and find out more information such as HomeBirthAustralia.Org

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Head on hands pose

South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Head on hands pose
South Gold Coast Newborn Photographer | Head on hands pose

Head on hands…

This pose captures the natural curliness of your newborn baby. It showcases how sleepy they are. Their ability to just be placed in any position and be content as a bug in a rug.

How the pose is safely done:

The head on hands pose consists of gently posing your baby’s head to lay on top of their arms. Crossing over their little legs and allowing them to be on their tummy. Your baby’s head will be facing out to the side towards the camera. So we can capture their precious little face.  This pose can be done on a newborn posing bean. A prop, like the moon pillow above. Or in a basket, bed or drawer prop.

Creativity in the pose:

There are an abundance of creative ways you can incorporate into this pose. Such as draping a blanket over the baby, dressing them up in a little outfit or showcasing all their squish!

Safety, Safety, Safety!

I say this time and time again… But it is the most important part about newborn photography. The safety of your precious baby is of utter most importance to the Dreamy Moon Photography team. That is why we will continuously update our training and safety skills with some of the best professional trainers around. Such as Tiny Hearts Education, this sister and mama led business is one of Australian leading educator in first aid. They have an updated module of first aid training and neo natal stress identifiers. Dreamy Moon Photography is trained in identifying any unusual signs with your newborn, during our session together.

Newborn Photography Gold Coast QLD | You’ll miss these moments

Why does time go so fast when you have little ones? It’s like we blink our eyes and they have grown double in size! Their little hands and toes, the sweet little features on their face. The rolls and the squish. We go to pop them into an outfit and they can barely squeeze into it. And you wonder, when, how… Did you grow so fast. We hold them and look at them everyday and some days are long. But the years, oh the years are so short. In a matter of time they are big an independent and you wonder how did the days turn into memories. The bitter sweet moments, at the time you wished would hurry up. But now you want them back. You want to hold onto those memories and make them last forever…

Newborn Photography Gold Coast QLD | You’ll miss these moments

…And you can, well kind of. Through the lens of photography, you can freeze time. Treasure those memories and turn them into precious keepsakes. The art of turning your memories into forever. Time goes so fast when you have young children, we are caught up in the hustle and bustle of surviving parenthood. The survival guide and constant feeling of ‘am I doing this right’, that it is easy to get distracted. The most precious thing we can have is professional images of our newborn babies and children. Something to look back on and reminisce. Something to hold, flick through and soak in the memories of when they were so little. Because they truely grow so fast.
